The Australian Business Register (ABR) has recently been updated to provide more information about deductible gift recipients (DGRs). The ABR now identifies for each deductible gift recipient (DGR) the item in the table in subsection 30-15(2) of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997 under which the entity qualifies as a DGR.

ASIC has released the results of its review of 30 June 2009 financial reports for 350 listed and unlisted entities.

It has used that review to identify a number of key areas for continued focus, including the appropriateness of going concern assumptions, asset impairments and fair value determinations for companies preparing their 31 December 2009.

At a time when $771 billion was wiped from the stockmarket and investors lost $23 billion in corporate collapses, ASIC last year obtained 34 criminal convictions, and 19 jail sentences and has secured more budget funding for enforcement actions. The regulator is now concentrating on a smaller number of cases where retail investor, consumer interest or market integrity is most at risk, and is using bannings as a deterrent rather than simply bringing criminal prosecutions. ASIC Chairman Tony D' Aloisio said, "The combination of a strong deterrent effect and faster outcome makes this a useful tool."
 
Government Consultation on GST Reforms - Non-profit Sub-entities PDF Print E-mail

On 11 September 2009, the Assistant Treasurer released a second consultation paper on reforms to goods and services tax (GST) administration aimed at improving the operation of the tax law.

Among a range of measures, the government proposes that the GST law will be amended to ensure that non-profit sub-entities are able to access the same GST concessions as their parent entity.

The consultation paper is now available on the Treasury website and consultation closes on 9 October 2009.
